History: LING AND GREED

Personality: DOUBLE PERSONALITY TIME

LING:

Yes the whole "on the surface" thing is incredibly cliche, but ON THE SURFACE, Ling tends to present himself as being overly cheerful, smiling constantly even in the ugliest of situations. He tends to come across as being bit on the immature side, displaying a complete lack of responsibility on several occasions by doing shit like forgetting to eat and passing out on the side of the street. In a foreign country. After ditching his bodyguards. When he DOES eat, he has a ridiculously voracious appetite and won't think twice about jacking up someone else's tab (or just Ed's) to appease it. Because he's a dick. Despite his mild dickness, he's extremely personable and doesn't have much difficulty gaining the trust of people he's befriended.

The carefree exterior is mostly a cover for his manipulative nature. He's extremely good at reading people's motives while keeping them guessing about himself. He'll go to any length to get what he wants, even if it means putting his pride on the back burner and sucking up to someone.

Ling's avarice is on par with Greed's. Rather than seeking things and possessions, Ling's greed stems from a desire to become the Emperor of Xing so he can protect his subordinates and countrymen. During a confrontation with King Bradley, he expressed his belief that a king exists for his people and that's it's a ruler's job to protect them at any cost. Despite the fact that he's kind of important and trying to become the Emperor of Xing, Ling Yao is the living embodiment of YOLO. He's put his own life in danger on a number of occasions for the sake of other people (to the point where he has to be reminded numerous times that HE'S KIND OF IMPORTANT and probably shouldn't be so reckless), and even accepted Greed's Philosopher's Stone despite the fact that doing so very well could have destroyed him. After he became a homunculus YOLO didn't really apply anymore, but hey,

GREED:

Greed wants ALL THE STUFF EVER. That's what he'd have people believe, anyway. YES, obviously Greed IS quite greedy, often blabbering on about wanting money, women, riches, THE WORLD, blah blah blah just give him things, but there's more to him than just being a rampant, greedy asshole. Beneath that greedy asshole exterior, he's still a greedy asshole, but he's the "deep" kind of greedy in that "baww i actually just wanted good friends all alooooong" sort of way. I guess it doesn't sound very badass if I explain it that way but that's literally what happened at the end of the series. He was all about taking over the world at one point, but the canon point he's coming from has him dialing that aspect of his greediness back considerably. Well maybe not considerably. Actually only a tiny bit. Still.

Greed's personality is actually pretty amicable, if not rough around the edges. He'll flirt with women and pal around with people in his own semi-assholeish Greed way. He has an extremely hard time letting go of grudges, especially when it comes to someone taking his possessions from him (AKA killing his friends). Unlike the other homunculi, he doesn't have a massive hateboner for humanity and is perfectly fine with working with humans. As long as he gets to be in charge, of course. A pro to his avaricious nature is the fact that it makes him very accepting of other people regardless of flaws or personal history, often attracting the outcasts of society. Like chimeras. A lot of chimeras. He's protective of those he considers "his belongings" and will fuck you up if you fuck with them.

Okay so maybe he's a little less complicated than Ling.

Abilities, Strengths and Weaknesses:

Ling is an impressive martial artist, and has exceptional skill with swords as well. He's fast and agile, and deceptively quick witted despite his outward laziness. For someone as young as he is, he possesses a great deal of experience in actual battle rather than just training. Having been the target for a number of assassination attempts for pretty much his entire life, Ling has no problem with fighting dirty if survival is on the line. Many Xingese martial artists (from royal lineage or servants of said royalty) posses the ability to sense the Qi (or life energy) of living beings like animals and people. Thanks to this ability, he can detect and fight enemies even in cases of poor visibility, assuming they posses some sort of life energy that can be sensed. He's also able to track Qi signatures from a great distance, assuming it's large enough (like a Homunculus, or a large number of people in one area) Greed is unable to do this, so Ling needs to be in control of the body for it.

Greed has the ability to harden the carbon in his body into an impenetrable shield, making him extremely difficult to injure or kill. He can also alter the carbon into charcoal or something weak and shitty like that but why the fuck would he want to do that here. Being a homunculus, he also possesses inhuman strength and speed, and he's had a couple hundred years of fighting experience. He can take a severe beating and even die a few times before going down permanently, assuming his shield can even be penetrated. This is also true for Ling, considering they share a body, but Greed seems to be the one controlling the whole carbon thing even when Ling is out.

As for WEAKNESSES. They don't have all that many, considering they share a nearly immortal body that possesses an impenetrable shield and regenerates immediately even after being killed or dismembered. HOWEVER, Ling appears to suffer from "pass out on the side of the road when you're hungry" syndrome. I don't know, anime low blood sugar problems or something it's not like they specified. Apparently he's retained this even after becoming a homunculus because he does the same fucking thing later in the series. Greed more than likely has the same problem since they share the body. And food in the box is limited. Sucks to be them.

While they can be killed and have their arms and shit chopped off repeatedly and then be perfectly fine a few seconds later, their Philosopher's stone CAN run out of energy if they die or have to regenerate too many times. It might take a while, but it is possible to FOR REAL kill them.

Greed's greed could be considered one in certain situations. He's very likely to throw himself into something dangerous if it means protecting people that he considers "his". His former incarnation was killed while trying to go all revenge mode on Wrath after he killed his bff chimeras, so IT'S A THING THAT COULD HAPPEN.

ALSO Greed isn't able to regenerate and carbonize new parts of his body at the same time, which can be pretty inconvenient.

Actually I guess Greed kind of brought more weaknesses to the table than Ling did hmm.

Prose Log Sample:

Ling had woken slowly, his eyes all but refusing to open as he forced himself to a sitting position. Once he'd gotten adjusted to being upright, he tried pushing himself to his feet. No easy task, considering he felt like he had five hundred pound dudes strapped to his limbs. He didn't stay on his feet too long, though. A sudden wave of dizziness forced him to sit back down on the bed.

Wait. Bed? When the hell had he been anywhere near a bed? His mind was foggy as he attempted to piece his thoughts together, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't think of a single reason that he'd be in a place like this. Wherever the hell this was. In fact, he couldn't remember anything beyond the fight with Homunculus.

Oh shit, that's right.

"Greed!" It was probably unnecessary to call his name out loud, considering they shared the same body and all, but the last thing that Ling clearly remembered was 'Father' jamming his hand into his abdomen trying to steal Greed's Philosopher's Stone. He could figure out where he was later, he was a little preoccupied with checking himself over. His shirt was torn where the creepy homunculus boss had stabbed into him, but there was no physical damage. The oroboros was still on the back of his hand, that meant Greed was still there, right? Alive and well and all that good shit? So why wasn't the asshole answering? "Dammit, Greed! Say something!"

"I'm right here, relax!" Greed's reply seemed a little distant at first, an odd sort of muffled voice in the back of Ling's mind. Apparently Greed was dealing with the same odd disorientation as Ling was. Maybe he was a little on the overly calm side for someone whose last memory was of being seconds away from dying horribly, but apparently something like that was magically no longer an issue. As fucked up as this was, he was kind of okay with not being dead. "You wanna tell me where the hell we are? If you're gonna be out and about, get your act together!"

That overly aggressive reply brought a small smile to Ling's face. Even if Greed was being kind of an asshole, the prince couldn't help but be relieved that his weird body partner was still alive.

"Nice to see you, too. You're awfully demanding, Greed." He'd save the real nagging for later, though. Greed did have a good point. Now that Ling's head was a bit more clear and he'd confirmed Greed's condition, he took a quick look around. The size of the room as well as the furniture suggested it must be some sort of hotel, though there were things laying around that he didn't recognize. The Qi signature that he was picking up was the really confusing part. "I don't know where we are, but this doesn't feel like Central. No... it doesn't even feel like Amestris."

"What the hell does that mean!?" Having already had enough of this bullshit, Greed seized control of the body without warning. Rather than charging out the door to demand answers from whoever the hell they might come across, he decided that checking his hair in the bathroom mirror was top priority. That was his excuse, maybe, but mostly he was a little preoccupied with the whole being alive thing. This whole situation felt a little surreal to him. Still, he wasn't so far out of it that he didn't notice that the face in the mirror definitely looked like it had seen better days. "You look like shit, by the way."

"What was that? I don't look any worse than you do!" Ling was already pretty used to Greed yanking control of the body back whenever he felt like it, but it didn't make it any less annoying. "Why don't you go find out what's happening. I'll cheer you on. Sound good?"

"Sure, works for me." Greed started running the sink faucet and grumbled something under his breath as he splashed himself in the face with cold water. Hopefully that would help get rid of the weird not-quite-awake feeling. Everything was weird. "I've always wanted my own cheerleader."

They took one last look around the room before deciding there wasn't really anything of immediate use in it, and headed out into the hall. For adventures and shit.

A QUESTION FOR THE LOVELY MODS!: I understand that the Technicians are beneath the box. Would Ling be able to determine that there are people down there with his Qi sensing abilities, or is it safe to assume that there's a block in place for something like that? Like the barrier or something?
